Centralized Log Repository

The implementation of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect on May 25, 2018, and it imposes requirements on the processing of personal data applicable to your systems as well. More information can be read from Flamma.

The Centralized Log Repository is a service offered by the IT center, where log data from other university information systems are collected. The EU General Data Protection Regulation requires system owners to demonstrate who has viewed or processed an individual’s data, when, and why. The integrity of log data is ensured by copying system logs outside to the centralized log repository.

Logs from systems containing personal data need to be sent to the University of Helsinki’s centralized logging service, unless the GDPR-compliant log securing is already handled in some other way, such as by the vendor ensuring the logs.

To connect the system to the log service, a log collection program must be installed on the server. The person primarily responsible for these tasks will be granted access to the page, where necessary installation instructions can be found. Note: logs will also remain on the server as before.
